New Folk Sounds is a two monthly magazine about folk, bal folk, americana, cajun, world music, balkan beats, gipsy swing and celtic music; music with a tradition.

01-05-2011 Tivoli Oudegracht - a report!

Hell yeah! We did it! We crushed Tivoli Oudegracht! And again the Balfolk Fantasy Night was a big hit. There are beautiful photos online of Tivoli photographer Tim van Veen on the website of Tivoli. Due to a bigger hall, there was much more space to dance and the atmosphere was very sociable with a lot of well known faces; a great place for a balfolk! Here is a short report:

On Friday we arrived to get our stuff in (due to an obstruction in the road the next day on our Dutch Queen's Day). The Tivoli smelled of attenuated beer and we felt at home immediately. It was hard to imagine that this big empty space would be filled with dancing and laughing people?! Our performance tingles began to itch!

On Saturday we came in early to do a soundcheck with our brand new sound engineer Simon Kemme (Check his website Audio Core Productions!) Also our friends from the Kelten zonder Grenzen and the Gonnagles arrived soon and we were a cosy gang immediately. Our dearest merchbabes Suze and Kim set up our merchstand and there was nearly enough space for all our cds, shirts and thingies. Tivoli looked after us very well with a richly filled refrigerator with all kinds of juices and lunch and a very good evening meal.

At night it was show time! The Gonnagles and the Kelten zonder Grenzen both played a very good show which we enjoyed a lot. Our light engineer Wijnand and our VJ Jen took care of a sparkling entourage with their lights and projections. We felt really comfortable with all those hard working, professional people around us! We played 5 new tunes and the response was awesome! We were even invited to play an extra tune… Thank you so much!!!

En while a big group of Orfeos and Kelten made their way to Café Belgie (our local pub around the corner!) to celebrate the success of the evening, another department left with fully loaded vans homewards… but all with a smile on their faces! Hell yeah!

21-04-2011 Balfolk Fantasy Night II

Our next gig is coming closer... a second Balfolk Fantasy Night! We are very exited, because we are going to play a couple of totally new tunes for you!

Balfolk Fantasy was already introduced silently on Summer Darkness 2010 on the Domplein in Utrecht (NL). After an overwhelming first night with the real premiere of the Balfolk Fantasy Night in Tivoli de Helling (14th of january 2011), we are ready for a sequel...

On the 30th of april you can dance in Tivoli Oudegracht (Utrecht, NL) on a secons Balfolk Fantasy Night! A bigger location, more space to dance en also on our Dutch Queen's Day: this will definately be a big party! Performing bands are: Orfeo (rock- / metal influences), Kelten zonder Grenzen (accoustic folk with harp, violin and hurdy-gurdy) and the Gonnagles (balfolk partymusic). 

For people who do not dance: Balfolk means dancing on West-European music, played by new bands. This can be dances for two, like scottish, polka or bourree, or group-dances, like the jigue or cercle. Tivoli Oudegracht is rather big, so also the non-moving audience will have space enough to enjoy the concert.... but standing still is almost impossible! Besides, we will begin the evening with a dance-instruction, so everybody can join in dancing.

At the John Geven Studio's!

05-03-2011 Orfeo photo shoot report!

On a bright day somewhere last week we left very early in the morning for the John Geven Studio's (www.johngevenstudios.nl) in Nuenen. With two new band members in the band we were really ready for a new band picture! John is a old friend of ours: six years ago he took the first Orfeo band picture in an improvised studio behind a small shop. We took a lot of Guinness with us for the photo. This was for a photo report of Folkwoods festival people and our picture was indeed displayed at the festival next year. Almost two years ago John also made the band pictures for our first album 'Inferno'.

John is besides a top photographer also a very nice man and has a special background. After a diving accident he ended up in a wheel chair. Years later, when he decided he wanted to get into photography, a from a distance controllable photo studio was build for him with the  help of the students of the Technical University of Eindhoven. Since then John has settled himself between the big photographers in Holland, does photo shoots for international companies, has 3 photographers working for him and has a huge studio on his name. An impressive career indeed!

At our arrival we look at a gigantic building with flashy letters saying: John Geven Studio's. In a big visagist room we look around flabbergasted and then we begin the game with tops, make-up, hair and shoes, while the guys check out photos of female models. After a joyful reunion with John and the introduction of our new band members we begin shooting and John does something with lights, measurements and computers and he has lot of inspiring ideas. After a whole afternoon we are ready and we leave for home with a smile on our faces to celebrate this successful day in the pub.

Right now we are looking at the raw material and we have to select the best pictures. A photo report of our day is in our photo gallery. And soon of course… the presentation of our new pictures! Keep an eye on our website. And: a very big thank you to John!!!!

03-03-2011 A second Balfolk Fantasy Night!

Yes, that's right, there will be another Balfolk Fantasy Night! And since the first night was so crowded and filled with enthusiastic people, this time we move to a bigger location: Tivoli Oudegracht! This means more space to dance! This time Orfeo and the Kelten zonder Grenzen invite the Gonnagles to play on stage. All ingredients for a good party are there.
